About the area...

Gours, St Seurin sur l'Isle & surrounding area have plenty to offer.  There are vineyards around making for pleasant scenic walks and many châteaux nearby to visit, including the local village château, Haut Meillac where the owners are welcoming and you can try and buy some local wines.  St Seurin isn't far (approximately 5km) and has a supermarket, a few bakeries and shops. There is also a local Sunday market at St Seurin selling clothing, oysters, cheese, cognac and other things you might not see at home! There is also a man made beach on the river at St Seurin (approx 5km) where pedaloes and kayaks can be hired and a small children's play area. There is also a lake near Villefranche (approx 9km) which has a beach with a supervised area where boats/pedaloes can be hired and a children's play area.  During July and August the town of Le Pizou holds a night market every Tuesday - take along your crockery and cutlery, choose your food and drinks from the various stalls and enjoy the sights and atmosphere; there's music too!

Libourne (approximately 20km) is a nearby wine-trading town on the banks of the Dordogne River. On Sundays there is a local market in the town. There is also a commercial centre just outside of the town for a spot of shopping which includes a supermarket, boutiques, a cosmetic store and places to eat.

St Emilion (approximately 20km) is a picturesque medieval town of narrow cobbled streets, with ancient limestone buildings, churches and ruins. A large wine producing area known for high quality wines, St Emilion has many Cru and Grand Cru Château. Named after the monk Emilion, the town is home to a monolithic church created by the monks as a monument to Emilion, their saint. There are guided tours of the vineyards and cellars, and guided walks in the area as well as shops, cafes and restaurants to visit.  Some vineyards in the area offer tours and tastings and there are wine tasting classes available at the Maison du Vin de St Emilion. There is also Golf de Bordeaux-Cameyrac nearby or for those who want to indulge in a bit of pampering there is the Grand Barreil spa where a range of treatments are available - see the Links page for websites, including the tourist office.

Bordeaux (approximately 65km) is both a historical and cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do. Whether you want to wander around and take in the sights or take a guided tour, go shopping or relax, try fine wines and gastronomy, visit museums and art galleries or sample the nightlife, Bordeaux has plenty to do. There are also several golf courses in and around Bordeaux, including Golf de Pessac (5km SW of Bordeaux) and Golf du Medoc (18km NW of Bordeaux). Other ways of unwinding include visiting the local spa Vinotherapy.

Bergerac (approximately 55km) is a medieval town famous for wines where you can visit cellars, taste wine, go walking and take a cruise on the River Dordogne. Golf is available at nearby Château des Vigiers, recognised as one of the country’s top golf courses approximately 20 minutes away and Villeneuve-sur-Lot Golf and Country Club approximately 30 minutes away.

Arcachon (approximately 125km), "the town of four seasons" has white sandy beaches on the Atlantic and offers plenty of things to do from bike riding and tennis to a variety of watersports and a thalassotherapy centre, plus restaurants. It is approximately 45 minutes from Bordeaux Airport.
